What should be my first step in learning how to snow board?

I'm really intrested in learning but i live in VA where it's not really snowy all the time. Would the best bet be to learn how to skateboard first?? because i CAN'T skateboard at all. What does it feel like when your snowboarding? like your flying? lol. what should i do????? i'm going to learn one way or another.
