How to get the cold out of the babys throat when he/she is coughing?

my son coughs and i can hear a noise like he is trying to cough up the phlegm/flem, how am i meant to get that out, someone told me to put tumeric and honey on his tongue and the cold will come up like spit but is there another way? help me
